In 1924, Father Joseph Caffuzzi, with the help of the Pallotine Sisters, opened the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish School for 205 children. As the number of students continued to grow, a new school was built in 1949 by Msgr. Joseph M. Pernicone. The new school was beautiful to behold with all the latest facilities and equipment. It contained a total of 18 classrooms, including two kindergarten classes. The Auditorium and Gymnasium ( Caffuzi Hall ) are located in the "L" shaped wing on the corner of 188th Street and Bathgate Avenue and can accomodate over 1200 people. This still stands as part of our building today. The school was completely occupied by our students on October 17, 1949. His Eminence Cardinal Francis Spellman solemnly dedicated the new jewel on Sunday, October 3rd of that year. In 1956, in its Golden Jubilee year, an extension and convent were added to increase the school's capacity to a now immense 1,800 capacity. Our Pastor now Bishop Perricone and again His Eminence Cardinal Spellman dedicated the completed school on May 6, 1956, gracing the parish with the premiere school in our Region of the North-West South-Bronx of the Archdiocese of New York. Our school continued to thrive throuhout the decades as a second home for the thousands of children raised in the "Little Italy section of the Bronx." For over 90 years, Our Lady of Mount Carmel School has educated thousands of young boys and girls spiritually and scholastically, as it continues to do today. The message is today as it was since the first day our school doors opened. Under the patronage of Our Lady of Mount Carmel our school has strived to do the greatest good for the greatest number: therefore making a positive impact on our community.
